On the 3rd April, WhiteHat had the pleasure of hosting codebar, a non-profit initiative that facilitates the growth of a diverse tech community, at our offices for a tech meetup.
As an organisation with diversity at the centre of our mission, it was rewarding to see so many diverse individuals in attendance. People from a variety of different backgrounds filled the office, either as a student or a coach.
Students were paired up with coaches at the start of the event depending on what they were working on, a codebar tutorial, a personal project or other. A large number of attendees used the meetup as an opportunity to work on their portfolio.
It was evident that all attendees shared the common desire to try programming.
Here are the key takeaways:
- There's a plethora of diverse candidates out there. By engaging with organisations like codebar, we can connect with these candidates and grow our talent pool
- Teaching, and the exchange of knowledge, is a great way of giving back to the community
- Diversity is a goal we can pursue at all levels. WhiteHat has the opportunity to inspire a younger generation to pursue a career in STEM related field
It was our first time holding an event of this nature and, by running the event in partnership with codebar, it opened up conversation surrounding diversity in tech and how to inspire a less represented audience.
"I’ve been to lots of good tech meetups and events over the past couple of years but codebar is next level! The room filled up with students with such different experiences. If you are looking for passion, support and eagerness to learn within a truly diverse group of people get in touch with them! I left so inspired and with a list of ideas about how I’m going to be supporting and pushing more diversity on our tech apprenticeships here at WhiteHat!" Anna Taylor, Senior Talent Manager
